The world's first radon spa Jáchymov is located 130 km from the Czech capital and only 17 km from Karlovy Vary, at an altitude of 650 m above sea level. This small town, founded in 1516 by Count Schlick, has long been famous for its wealth of minerals. The prerequisite for the creation of the world's first radon spa in the early 20th century was the scientific discovery of Pierre and Marie Curie, who separated the first radioactive elements from radium and polonium from Jachymov ore.
The main curative wealth of the resort is bicarbonate-sodium-thermal mineral waters with natural radioactivity. In addition to the high content of radon, local mineral water also boasts the presence of rare elements - molybdenum, titanium and beryllium. Due to these circumstances, the resort is recommended as an exceptionally effective place for treating diseases of the musculoskeletal system of various etiology and degree of complexity.

Indications for sanatorium treatment
Contrary to popular beliefs about radiation, radon treatment is very careful: it does not subject the body to high temperature stresses, does not violate the equilibrium of its systems. Therefore, it is very well tolerated, including by older people.
The main specialization of Yakhimov is chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system:
- inflammation: all rheumatic inflammation of the joints, soft tissues and spine (rheumatic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic psoriasis, fibromyalgia, Bekhterev's disease)
- pain and rigor caused by wear (arthrosis of the joints and spine, prolapsed discs, damage to tendons, ligaments and meniscuses)
- metabolic disorders (osteoporosis, gout, porphyria)
- damage to the peripheral nerve or root of the spinal cord (neuritis, neuralgia, peripheral paralysis, spinal cord syndrome, polyneuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome).
In addition, "Jachymov" treatment is effective in post-operative and post-traumatic conditions that require intensive treatment and regeneration of damaged tissues (joint replacement, spinal surgery or large scars after burns).
Radon treatment also has a pronounced restorative effect under conditions of general energy disharmony:
- vegetative lability, nevrocirculation weakness (cold extremities, slight collapse, chilliness, functional organ dysfunction, climacteric syndrome)
- depletion at high labor stress
- general weakness in old age
- maintenance of the body's functional reserves at an early stage of multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease
- recovery from professional athletes.
The treatment also gives excellent results in peripheral vascular diseases: anemia, atherosclerosis of the vessels of the extremities, conditions after venous inflammation, rheumatic vasculitis.

Healing sources Yakhimova
One of the most important parts of the resort is the Svornost mine, in which medical radon water is trapped. It is from here that it is delivered to the balneological departments of the sanatoriums of Yakhimov. Now for the needs of the resort there are 4 sources: Curie spring - water temperature 29 ° C, C1 (C1 spring) - temperature 29 ° C, Běhounek spring - water temperature 36 ° C and Agricola spring - temperature 29 ° C.
The main methods of treatment in Jáchymov
Radon (more precisely, radon isotope 222) is a chemically inert gas that is released in the Krušné horizon and dissolves in groundwater .It is he who is the source of soft ionizing alpha radiation .In radon baths, the surface of the body is exposed, the so-called energy soul, consisting of radon alpha particles, which causes a chain of physiological reactions .Penetration of radon into the bloodstream is negligible, and the "biological half hour" (the period of radon excretion from the body) is 20 minutes, that is, in fact, the duration of the radon bath .
In the treatment of radon waters, there are two main curative factors: the balneological effect of the most mineral radon water and the effect of ionizing radiation arising from the decay of radioactive gas.
Basic procedures:
- balneology: radon baths, radon galvanic baths, chamber baths
- rehabilitation of work ability: collective therapeutic physical training, individual therapeutic exercise in the pool with warm water, exercises on the apparatus, ergotherapy
- physiotherapy: electrotherapy, magnetic pulsed field, laser therapy, ultrasound, diathermy, cryotherapy, inhalation
- massages: classical, reflex, partial
- hydrotherapy: underwater massages, vortex massages, Charcot's shower, pearl massages
- special therapy: brachyradiapathy, radiotherapy
- other procedures: oxygen therapy, acupuncture, dry carbon dioxide baths, mobilization and manipulation techniques.
Traditional Jachymov treatment
After the initial examination, the spa physician makes an individual treatment plan upon admission and assessment of the patient's health. Therapeutic procedures are based on traditional balneological methods, which include physiotherapy, special rehabilitation and radon baths, the therapeutic effect of which helps the patient to get rid of the pain and improves the general condition. In addition, the complex spa treatment includes and therapeutic nutrition: all types of basic diets. The optimal therapeutic effect comes after a three-week spa treatment. The minimum length of stay is 12 days
The standard program, as a rule, includes:
- accommodation with full board, according to the prescription of the doctor, a dietary meal is possible
- medical examination upon admission and basic laboratory tests
- follow-up medical examination once a week
- 23 treatment procedures per week in accordance with the prescriber's appointments
- medical examination at discharge and medical report.
