The city was founded in the 7th century on a small island off the coast .In the 12th century the island was connected to the land, and on the spot of the flooded channel its central street was formed, which is now called Stradun .Like most historic streets in old cities, this street is a pedestrian zone .Both ends of it are marked by fountains - Bolshoi Onufriev and Maliy Onufriev .In both ends there are the bell towers - Gorodskaya at the western end, and the bell tower of the Franciscan monastery at the eastern end .The modern view of the street was formed in the 17th century, after the earthquake in 1667, when most buildings were destroyed .
The end of the 20th century brought new destruction to the streets, but now Stradun is put in order and pleases its kind of citizens and tourists.
The old town is literally packed with all kinds of sights: the Museum of Navigation, the Ethnographic Museum, the Church of St. Blasius - the patron saint of the city, the fountains of the famous Italian architect Onofrio de la Cavi, the oldest synagogue in Europe .Theater Marin Drzhik, Art Gallery, University Center .The picturesque and romantic island of Lokrum, the "aquarium" in the old town, the market in the port of Gruz (here you can always buy fresh fruit and house wine), the city park, the port of the old city (from here the boats go to Cavtat, Plat and Mlini) .
The city walls of Dubrovnik are interesting .This is not just a picturesque landmark, it is believed that one of the best preserved urban fortifications in Europe is .The view of the wall was acquired in the 16th century with the help of Italian architects, and the protective breakwater, which saved the city from storms and pirates, was built in the 15th century .In the 14th century, a Franciscan monastery was founded in Dubrovnik, from which the southern portal, which is an excellent example of architecture of the time, was preserved today, and in the 17th century a baroque style cathedral was built, the interior of which is adorned with the Titian "Ascension" painting .
Not bad, despite systematic fires, earthquakes and explosions of gunpowder, the prince's palace built in the 15th century .Today it houses a museum with a very interesting collection dedicated to the history of Dubrovnik .On the territory of the palace is the only monument erected in the history of the Dubrovnik Republic - the rich seafarer Pratsata, who bequeathed to her in the 17th century all her fortune .History is silent about why they did not put any monuments to anyone else: either nobody left the will, or simply the tradition was ... one of the most famous sights of the city is the Orlando Column, on top of which for four centuries the flag of Dubrovnik republic .The column stands on the square with a strange name for the Russian rumor - Luzha .Here are several significant for the city and simply beautiful buildings, which makes the architectural ensemble of the area very attractive and memorable .
