Prior to joining the eurozone on January 1, 2002, Austrian shilling was the national currency of Austria. Was in circulation in Austria since March 1, 1925, replacing the Austrian kroon, devalued by inflation, until 1938, when, after the Anschluss with Germany, was temporarily replaced by the Reichsmark. After the war in 1945, the shilling again became the monetary unit of the country.

Schilling was in circulation in parallel with EUR until February 28, 2002. The exchange of schillings for EUR is made at the rate of 1 EUR equal to 13, 7603 shillings

Austria is included in the list of countries that have the right to print EUR self-issued for the internal circulation of the EUR banknote and puts its letter -N.
