Bad Gastein is a very pathetic and expensive resort in the Gasteinertal region, located in a valley at an altitude of 1600 m, with an aristocratic clientele and the reputation of "mountain Monte Carlo". Its main feature is the ability to combine riding with recovery in thermal springs.
The resort is picturesquely stretched in the shape of a horseshoe along the foot of the mountains, located on three levels. Here the architectural ensembles of the late 19th century are combined with the newest buildings and fit organically into the mountain landscape. One of the symbols of Bad Gastein is the waterfall, which is located in the heart of the resort. Another institution that has made Bad Gastein famous throughout Austria is the oldest mountain casino.
The ski season lasts from December to March. There are not many easy descents, so this area is recommended for "advanced" skiers, as well as those wishing to improve their health on thermal springs (plus radon baths, treatment in salt galleries, spa and beauty treatments).

Bad Gastein trails
The resort has three ski areas: Stubnerkogel - Schlossalm, Graukogel and Sportgastein. From the upper part of the city, from the railway station, the high-speed cable car to Stubnerkogel (1090-2230 m) begins. Soft "blue" slopes there often turn into steep "red" tracks, so skating is recommended only confidently on skis.
All routes of the area are available for "advanced" boarders. The passage to the Schlossalm mountain area (2050 m) is carried out through Skizentrum Angertal (1175 m) - an excellent place for children's skiing and learning.
The Graukogel region is in the shadow of the valley, so the snow here is of good quality even in thaw. On the forest clearings are laid two very decent tracks - "black" and "red" (with options). Skating here is not for beginners, and most of the lifts are outdated.
Sportgastein (1585-2650 m) is the highest and snowy place in the valley with an unpleasant reputation of an avalanche area (especially after heavy snowfalls). Get there better by bus (7 km). Trails "black" and "red", well suited for virgin skiing and downhill.
Entertainment, excursions and attractions Bad Gastein
Mountain trails, health-improving complex "Felsenbad" with open and closed pools with thermal water, sauna, and medical programs. Bowling, casino, 30 restaurants, 16 bars and discos, "fan center" on Mount Stubnerkogel (with a children's playroom and a cinema), an amusement park in the Congress Center (disco, computer games, attractions).
