Vienna Forest (Wiener Wald) is worth a visit at least for the sake of its nature: here you can pick mushrooms, sunbathe on the lawn, admire the views from the observation deck and, finally, a snack in a nice restaurant almost in the bosom of nature. Previously, it was a popular place for walks around the city, Kafka and Freud used to be here, and it was almost impossible to find a free dacha in the forest surroundings. As it is today.
How to get here
You can get to the Vienna Woods by U4, stop Heiligenstadt, then by bus number 38A (passing by the main viewing platforms - Kobenzl, Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg).

What to see
Sitting on the bus number 38A, which rides along a narrow street with villas of the 19th century, it is worthwhile to choose the route in advance.
If you want to warm up, it's better to go to the stop of Cobenzl (Am Cobenzl, this stop is difficult to miss: there is a giant parking lot with a hotel). Another option is to go one stop further and, following Krapfenwaldlgasse, find the outdoor Krapfenwald swimming pool. After two more stops, the bus arrives in Kahlenberg, at a height of 484 m. Here you should see the Polish church, the Stephaniewarte tower, walk to the Josefinenhütte hut or find the Sirbu tavern with a legendary view of the city.
Tired of the Viennese forest and a crowd of people, you can go to the city of Klosterneuburg, behind the mountain, where the baroque monastery and Austria's largest contemporary art collection are located.
If you take the bus N38A, which does not go back to the city, then you can get to Leopoldsberg (Leopoldsberg, the bus once every half hour). This is even a more pleasant place than Kahlenberg. There is a baroque church, remains of fortifications, a cafe, a magnificent view (including Klosterneuburg and its monastery.) The last bus leaves Leopoldsburg at about 6:30 pm, and from Kahlenberg - 22:30.
