Shanigarten is located - in contrast to the garden for guests of "gastgarten" - in public territory, in the square, in the pedestrian zone or even on the sidewalk, if it is wide enough, and always is located in the immediate vicinity of the main institution . The first Viennese Shanigarten was opened in 1754 by Johann Jacob Taroni in the street Graben in the Old Town - he arranged an open-air tent for the sale of lemonade.

From this first shanigarten, presumably, the name also happened. Jean or Shani - this Viennese abbreviation of the name of Taroni "Johann." Others believe that the word came from referring to waiters who used to be often called "Jean" or "Shani": Schani, trag 'den Garten hinaus.
